How to Tailor Your Resume to a Job Description in 10 Minutes

RisenResume · 6 min read

Sending the same resume to every job is the most common reason good candidates get ignored. A tailored resume matches the words and priorities of one specific posting, so both the screening software and the recruiter see an obvious fit. Here is a process that takes about ten minutes.

Minute 1 to 3: read the job description properly

Read it twice. Mark the hard skills and tools, the repeated phrases, the responsibilities, and the job title itself. These are the signals the employer cares about most. If something is mentioned more than once, it matters.

Minute 3 to 5: match your summary

Rewrite your summary so it reflects this exact role. Use the role title, name the one or two achievements most relevant to this job, and drop anything that does not fit. A summary aimed at this job beats a polished generic one.

Minute 5 to 8: adjust your experience bullets

You are not inventing experience, you are reframing real experience in the posting's language. If the job stresses "cross functional collaboration" and you did exactly that, use that phrase. Reorder your bullets so the most relevant achievements sit at the top, where they get read.

Minute 8 to 9: update your skills

Make sure every skill the job asks for that you genuinely have appears in your skills section, in plain text. Remove skills that are irrelevant to this role so the relevant ones stand out.

Minute 9 to 10: score the match

Before you send it, check how well the resume now matches. A match score tells you whether you have hit the important keywords or still have gaps to close. If the score is low, you have a few minutes well spent fixing it rather than a silent rejection.

Why this works

Tailoring does two things at once. It lifts your keyword match so you pass ATS screening, and it makes the recruiter's job easy, because the fit is obvious in the first few seconds. For more on the words to target, see our resume keywords guide.
