Nursing recruiters at hospital systems screen hundreds of RN applications per posting. They are scanning for one thing first: do you hold the licences and certifications this unit requires. Everything else — your clinical experience, your specialties, your soft skills — only gets read if the credentials check out. This guide shows you how to build an RN resume that passes the credentials filter, the ATS, and lands you the interview.
What hospital recruiters look for first
Three things, in this order: an active RN licence in the right state or compact, the specialty certifications matching the unit (BLS, ACLS, PALS, CCRN, etc.), and recent bedside experience in a similar care setting. Put all three in the top third of page one. If a recruiter has to scroll to confirm you are licensed, you have already lost ground.
The format that works
Single column, clean section headings, standard sans-serif font, PDF. Lead with a credentials and licensure block right under your name — this is the single biggest format difference between a nursing resume and a general one. Most other industries do not need this. Nursing does.

The summary opens with the licence, then immediately gives the recruiter the setting, the workload, and a quality signal. Numbers matter for nurses too — patient ratios, unit size, and certifications all read as credibility.

Strong nursing bullets show clinical scope, patient volume, and outcomes. Use the format: verb + clinical action + patient population + outcome or scale.

Common RN resume mistakes
- Burying the licence number and expiration. Hiring managers must verify these before extending an offer. If they have to dig for them, your application gets paused.
- Listing every duty from the unit handbook. "Took vital signs" is implied. Use the bullet space for what is unique — scope, certifications used, outcomes you contributed to.
- No numbers. Patient ratios, unit beds, codes attended, years in setting — all of these signal clinical scope to a recruiter.
- Generic objective statement. "Seeking a challenging position in healthcare" is not useful. Open with the role, years and setting.
- Heavy formatting. Hospital ATS systems are often older and stricter than tech ATS. Single column, no graphics, no creative headings.

Specialty matters: tailor the language
An ICU resume should emphasise acuity, drips, vents, and high-stakes interventions. An ED resume should emphasise triage, throughput, and trauma exposure. A med-surg resume should emphasise patient load, multi-system care, and care planning. Generic resumes underperform because recruiters need to see specialty fluency in the bullets.
