Accountant Resume Examples & Template (2026)
Accounting hiring is among the most credentials-driven of any field. CPA, EA, CMA, or progress toward those certifications signal seriousness; specific software fluency (NetSuite, QuickBooks, Workday, SAP) signals readiness to be productive on day one; and audit, close, or tax process ownership signals seniority. A great accountant whose resume buries any of these is at a serious disadvantage.
What hiring managers actually look for
CPA status (or progress, with the exams passed), accounting software you have used, accounting cycle ownership (full close, AP, AR, fixed assets, intercompany, consolidations), and revenue or transaction volume you have been responsible for.
The format that works
One page for staff or senior, two pages for manager and above. Single column, conservative font. Lead with credentials in the summary line. List certifications and licensure near the top.

Common accountant resume mistakes
- Burying CPA status. If you have it, lead with it. If you are working toward it, list the exams passed.
- Vague duty bullets. "Reconciled accounts" tells the recruiter nothing. Volume (entries per month, accounts owned, revenue scope) is what signals seniority.
- No close cycle metrics. Close days, audit adjustments, materiality of items owned — these are the accounting equivalents of business impact.
- Listing every software you have touched. Stick to platforms you can actually navigate confidently. Recruiters will ask.
- Generic objective statement. Replace with a real summary that includes credential, years, and the size of the business you have worked in.
