Financial Analyst Resume Examples & Template (2026)
Finance recruiters at investment banks, corporate FP&A teams, and private equity firms read resumes in under ten seconds. They are checking three things: a strong quantitative degree, modelling work with real dollar values, and clean formatting that signals attention to detail. A single typo on a finance resume often ends the application — the bar for precision is unforgiving.
What hiring managers actually look for
Recruiters look for: school and GPA (especially if you are within five years of graduation), Excel and modelling fluency demonstrated through specific deals or analyses, dollar-value scope (deal size, budget owned, P&L managed), and the certifications relevant to the path you are on (CFA, CPA, FMVA).
The format that works
One page, period — even at the senior associate level on Wall Street, one page is the standard. Single column, conservative font, no graphics. Lead with Education at the top if you are within three years of graduation; otherwise Education goes below Experience.

Common financial analyst resume mistakes
- Typos and number errors. A misaligned decimal on a finance resume signals you cannot be trusted with a model. Triple-check everything.
- Vague scope. "Built financial models" is invisible. "Built three-statement model used in $42M acquisition" is interview-worthy.
- No dollar values. Every meaningful finance bullet should have a number — deal size, budget, savings, variance, or revenue managed.
- Listing Excel as a skill without proof. Everyone lists Excel. Show what you did with it — pivots, XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, VBA macros, dynamic models.
- Burying education and GPA. If you are within three years of graduation, top of page. School and GPA carry real weight in finance hiring.

Build my resume freeInvestment banking vs corporate FP&A
Banking resumes lead with deal experience — list deals you have worked on with size, transaction type, and your role on the deal team. FP&A resumes lead with operating impact — forecasts owned, variance improved, business partners served, automations built. Tailor the resume to which side you are targeting.
Should you list deals you worked on?
Yes, if you are in banking, equity research, or PE. Format: target, deal type, deal size, your contribution. Be careful about confidentiality — list only public or completed deals, and confirm with your firm if uncertain.
